Musselman's Lake Cycling

Where:  Ballantrae Public School (map) located at 5632 Aurora Rd.  just north of Stouffville is our meeting spot.  From there we'll increase rides from 20km to 80km including flats and hills over the course of the spring, summer and fall.

When:  First ride is April 11th.  Then we'll meet every Saturday morning @ 9:00am.  Rides will depart at 9:15am sharp.

Who: Anyone looking to group ride is welcome

Why:  Lots of folks we cater to are training for the Ride to Conquer Cancer - others just like group riding

What:  Well you'll need a bike in working order, helmet, gloves, sun block, snacks, water, sun glasses are good too.  Remember rides are rain or shine.  There's no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing choices!

How:  We'll generally stick to the area bound by Bloomington Rd., Durham 23, Ravenshoe Rd. and the 404.

Cost: $0 - cheap but not easy :)

LESSON PLANS: Here's a taste of what we'll cover in our lessons together. Depending on your current ability we'll start you in one of the 3 steps and customize each lesson to optimize your skill development.
Step1: This steps has a focus on stance and balance with skiis in a wedge position. We'll cover use of ski lifts and develop ski turning by knee and foot rotation.
Step2: In this step we'll match the skis and develop edging and pressure control while also focusing on ski weighting / unweighting.
Step3: In this step we'll develop turn timing and co-ordination by introducing pole use and focusing on full body bending and stretching.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: I was professionally certified by the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance (CSIA) in 1989 and have taught special needs students, beginners, and the elderly.

TIPS FOR A GREAT LESSON:
Dress in layers ...enjoying the cold weather is all about being comfortable and remember there's no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing choices :)
When the temperature is less than -10C ensure ALL skin is covered and consider multiple layers to keep warm - you can always take layers off.
Pack fruit, water and lip balm skiing will dehydrate your body and wind burn will dry your lips quickly.
Sun glasses or tinted goggles for sunny days and clear lens glasses or goggles are great on windy and/or overcast days.
Consider getting snow tires for your vehicle as driving in ski country can be dangerous otherwise.

Here's a few references for spots where you can get good deals on gear and services. The fall period around Halloween is a great time of year to do a checkup on your equipment to make sure it will be ready for the season.
